No you dont need to update the client to play. It's recommended to Check FIles but if dont want its ok. Please read the announcements.

I know this is a bit off key or rather but... do you have to sign up in order to play on the server? or is there something else that I need to do to play on the server?

doesn't seem that way to me.. I tried to sign in and it wont let me unless something is wrong than I haven't noticed the problems yet
